Preface
Article Outline
This manual was written for program directors of core and subspecialty training programs in diagnostic radiology and nuclear medicine, radiologists with teaching or other supervisory responsibilities for radiology residents or fellows, radiology residency coordinators, and radiology chief residents. It is especially targeted toward new program directors, who may not be familiar with accreditation requirements or their program's current state of compliance with these requirements.
The articles were written by authorities in the field and relate to the clinical, educational, and research missions of academic radiology departments and residency programs. The topics include resident recruitment; internal and external program reviews; resident research; Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) requirements for programs and institutions; the role of the program director, residency coordinator, and chief resident; evaluation of residents, faculty members, and programs; American Board of Radiology examinations; the management of conflicts between faculty and residents; funding of graduate medical education; organized medicine; Web-based resources; educational infrastructure; and the teaching of residents. Each article includes objective information from the peer-reviewed literature, references to the ACGME requirements for radiology residency programs, and personal insights.
This manual was funded by the American College of Radiology, the Radiological Society of North America, and the Association of Program Directors in Radiology. The project had the generous support of Stanley Baum, MD, editor-in-chief of Academic Radiology.
Every attempt has been made to ensure that the information in each article is current; however, the regulations that govern the health care system—particularly ACGME requirements—are subject to constant change and interpretation. Program directors must be vigilant to identify changes that may affect their local residency training programs. Membership in the Association of Program Directors in Radiology and attendance at the annual meeting of the association are recommended as ways to keep current.
