Academic medicine has been long associated with the notion that academic rank ought to be tied to practice experience. Though promotion requirements vary markedly from institution to institution, it's not hard to spot the trend that, on average, full professors tend to be much older than assistant professors regardless of whether or not they have published prolifically. Even the American College of Radiology (ACR) recognizes the role of service, as ACR fellowship requires a minimum of 10 dues-paying years, and contribution requirements decrease as the number of years of dues-paying membership increases (

). In contrast, one can become a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics as soon as one is board-certified. ACR members are essentially buying fellowship status through time and annual dues paid.
