Radiomics and Breast Cancer Management

      We physicians who have chosen radiology as our medical specialty were attracted by the ability to image the human body in health and disease, and by our potential to differentiate between these two conditions. As radiologists, we have been rewarded and sometimes overwhelmed by an ever-increasing armamentarium of modalities providing images in greater detail, often including functional information on circulation, diffusion, and metabolic processes. Radiomics has arisen to exploit the information hidden in our digital images that we are unable to appreciate visually. Ideally a computer algorithm could automatically select/segment lesions from routine examinations without the need for radiologists as intermediaries, compare them with images from other modalities, biomarkers, and additional previously selected parameters, clinical data, etc., to furnish potentially useful prognostic and differential diagnostic information.
