The Attractions of a Rural Career

      A medical student approached a faculty radiologist with an unusual question. “I would like to become a rural radiologist,” he said, “but I am not sure how to do so. Can you help me?” The radiologist's first thought was, “That's strange.” “Why would you like to become a rural radiologist?” he asked. The student responded, “Because I grew up in a small town, and I know how much radiologists are needed in communities like mine. Can you help me?” Their brief conversation raises some often neglected but notable questions. What is rural radiology, and why is it important? What factors might draw medical students and residents to rural careers? And what can medical schools, radiology residency programs, hospitals, and communities do to recruit more radiologists to rural practice?
