“Coopetition” in Practice: Regional Collaborations in Radiology Resident Education

Published:February 25, 2023DOI:https://doi.org/10.1016/j.acra.2023.01.039
The concept of “coopetition”, or both collaboration and competition between 2 groups, is used in many industries to describe the process of competitors coming together for a mutual end goal. An example is different brands of the same food product funding a marketing campaign to promote the consumption of the food item, regardless of brand (

). One of the best examples of this in radiology is the creation of the DICOM standard, which allowed any image produced by any manufacturer to be transmitted and printed or viewed on equipment by another vendor for a radiologist to read (

). It initially represented a collaboration between the American College of Radiology (ACR) and the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) in 1983 and grew to be a standard endorsed by manufacturers and all imaging medical specialties, representing decades of coopetition.
